This passion I have for fish began when I was just a six-year-old child. My dad took us to spend the summer with my grandfather, and he told us we would also go with him to his work.

My grandfather’s job was to go fishing in the sea every day because he was the captain of a boat. He would leave so early that it was still dark, and when he returned in the afternoons, he would bring tuna or dorado, which is another type of fish.

One night, my grandfather asked me if my dad had already taught me how to fish, and I said no. My grandfather couldn’t believe that his grandson didn’t know how to fish yet and told me, “Tomorrow, I will teach you myself.” I was so excited that I could hardly sleep that night.

The next day, I woke up very early, just like my dad and grandfather, so I could go fishing with them. I was so excited to learn how to fish. When we were out at sea, my grandfather pulled out a somewhat old fishing rod, but I liked it. He said, “With this rod, I taught your father to fish, and now it’s your turn to learn.” He showed me how to put the hook on, and then we cast it into the sea. A long time passed without anything biting the hook. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to catch anything. I was already bored and sad because we were almost ready to return, and I still hadn’t caught anything, but…

Suddenly! I felt a strong tug and shouted, calling my grandfather and dad to help me. What had tugged on the rod was a huge fish, very beautiful. It was the first time I had seen something so impressive and strong. My grandfather said, “Congratulations, son! It seems your first fish will be a sailfish.”

They both said to me at the same time, “Come on, you can do it! Hold on tight and don’t let go. Come on, you can do it, Champ!” Everything happened so fast, but I swear it felt like it was all in slow motion. The fish was struggling; it wasn’t willing to let itself be caught, and it fought with all its might. I almost fell off the boat, but if it weren’t for them helping me, instead of me catching the fish, it would have dragged me down.

After much effort, the one who gave up was the fish, and I was able to catch it. We were all surprised to see how impressive and majestic that fish was.

The fish was the size of my grandfather! That was the day I fell in love with this job! Since then, it has been my passion, but now it’s my turn to teach you how to fish just as my grandfather taught me and to pass on our love for fishing.

“But Grandpa, tell me when!”
“When, Grandpa?”

Yes, my dad told me that you can’t teach me anymore because you went fishing with your dad and your grandfather. He also said it would be a long time before we see you again.

Tell me, how long do I have to wait!
Grandpa, don’t just smile!

Tell me how long it will take for you to come back!
Don’t just smile!
And tell me why I can’t go with you, Grandpa…
